What salon software actually costs
The monthly fee is the part you can see. Here is how the rest of the bill is built.

Ask an owner what their booking system costs and most will name the monthly fee. Ask them what they paid last year, in total, and very few can tell you. That gap is not carelessness โ it is how the pricing is designed. There are four separate ways money leaves your shop, and only one of them shows up on the page where you signed.
1. The subscription
The visible number. Watch for two things: whether it is charged per location or per staff member, and whether the features you were shown in the demo are actually in the tier you picked. A price that looks small at three technicians can double when you hire two more, and the calendar tools you liked are often one tier up.
2. Commission on bookings
Platforms that run a marketplace usually take a percentage of a booking they consider theirs. It is charged on the service value, not on profit, so it comes out before you pay your technician. On a $65 first visit, a rate in the twenties is more than a technician earns on that service in some commission structures.
3. Attribution โ the part nobody explains
This is the one that surprises people. A client sees your Instagram post, taps your booking link, and creates an account on the platform on the way through. On some systems that client is now counted as their new client, not yours, and the percentage applies. You paid for the ad, the photo, the years of building that page โ and a fee lands on the booking anyway.
Before you sign anything, ask one question and get the answer in writing: if a client arrives through my own link, my own website, or my own Google listing, is that ever billed as a new-client booking? The answer tells you most of what you need to know about who you are dealing with.
4. Card processing
Every system charges this because the card networks charge it. What differs is the markup on top and whether you can bring your own processor. Compare the effective rate โ the total fees divided by the total volume โ not the headline rate, which usually excludes several categories of card.
Do the year, not the month
Take last year: your subscription ร 12, plus the commission on every booking they classified as theirs, plus processing. Most owners doing this for the first time find the commission line is larger than the subscription โ sometimes several times larger. It is worth an evening with the invoices.
How we do it: one daily rate, the same for every shop, no commission of any kind, and processing billed at cost by the payment provider. There is a calculator on our home page if you want to compare against your own numbers.
